If you’re looking for the perfect mix of bustling metropolis and exotic charm, Singapore has it all. With wonderful, old world treasures hidden in its shophouse lined streets, it’s also a city that’s buzzing with fabulous restaurants, great boutiques and excellent cafés. Here are some of the best spots I discovered on my recent trip there.
For the right blend of historic glamour and comfort, you can’t beat the Intercontinental. With its ideal location on Middle Road, iconic facade and rooftop pool, it’s an elegant oasis and the perfect escape from the buzzing city outside its walls.
White Ginger, a lovely boutique in Tanglin Mall, is the place to head for some excellent shopping. Stocking brilliant beachwear and jewellery (and some particularly good kaftans,) they also sell beautiful, fresh home accessories - including the full range of Cochine!
Como Cuisine on Dempsey Road is a great lunch spot with stunning, bright and airy decor and delicious, healthy food. For dinner, I loved Don Ho on buzzing Keong Siak Street. With its fabulous bar and tropical decor, it’s the perfect place to go for exotic cocktails and a fun night out.
A trip of a lifetime, and truly one for the bucket list, I stepped on board the Orient Express. Over 3 days en route from Singapore to Bangkok, the train passes through the jungles of Malaysia, paddy fields of Thailand and finally ends up at the Bridge over the River Kwai. A wonderfully luxurious taste of time gone by, a stay in its glamorous carriages compels you to turn your phone off and enjoy the moment as you watch the world go by.
